A Guide to Wastewater Treatment in Malaysia
A Guide to Wastewater Treatment in Malaysia

Department of Environmental (DOE) Malaysia plays an important role in monitoring wastewater discharge activities from industrial areas. Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009 is introduced as a guideline for industrial users to manage their wastewater generated from daily production. In this blog, we’ll address 5 frequently asked questions about wastewater treatment in Malaysia.

What is Industrial Effluent?
Industrial Effluent is any waste in the form of liquid generated from the manufacturing process. The process includes
  1. Wastewater generated from the treatment of water for process water supply.
  2. Wastewater generated from industrial activities

Why do we need an Industrial Effluent Treatment System (IETS)?
As responsible Malaysian citizens, it is our responsibility to protect our water resources from any source of pollution. Illegal discharge of toxic wastewater or dumping of hazardous waste into waterbody will cause severe consequences, like Kim Kim River Toxic Pollution case in 2019 at Pasir Gudang, Johor. The incident affected about 3,000 victims and required a cleaning operation of 1.5kilometer stretch of affected river. With the presence of IETS, you can treat your own wastewater to a safe discharge standard before release to inland water.

Where can I check for more details about Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009 and courses for Competent Person?
You can find the details in the official DOE website, or click the link below

When I need to kick-start to build IETS in my premises.
The answer is always START RIGHT NOW! If you’re currently having a new startup factory and it has potential to produce wastewater during your future production, the best approach is to start engaging an experience wastewater treatment consultant to assist in design and build a reliable system for your premises. It takes time for the site survey, documentation preparation, and submission for DOE to approve the construction of new IETS. If your factory is operating now without a proper treatment system for your wastewater, don’t worry about that, Spektra Watertech is here to help and guide you step by step until you successfully have a well-functioning Industrial Effluent Treatment System.

Who is the Competent Person?
An IETS without a good operation team is like having a good private jet without a good pilot, things will worsen if no proper control of the system. Hence, DOE works together Environment Institute of Malaysia (EiMAS) to provide a series of certified courses related to environmental management. The courses related to industrial effluent are
  1. Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems (Physical Chemical Processes) – CePIETSO-PCP
  2. Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems (Biological Processes) – CePIETSO-BP
Competent Person (CP) is a certified and well-trained personal who had attended the course, completed their field training report, and was interviewed by EiMAS before obtaining the certification.
